September 7, 2010 -- In the first-ever matchup of two hometown high school football teams, the Elyria High Pioneers and the Elyria Catholic Panthers will go head-to-head at Ely Stadium on September 9, at 7p.m. Fox Sports Ohio will televise the game (check with cable
provider for channel details).
With more than 175 years of history between them -- each with its own distinguished football legacy-- it’s a wonder the two teams haven’t met on the scrimmage line before.
“The idea came up about two years ago when EC had an opening in its schedule and the coach was interested, but it never materialized,” says Elyria Athletic Director, Jerry Chizmar. “Since then, the idea has been building steam. With the opening of the new high school, it seems like a great time to shine a light on the community. This game will be a special thing for Elyria.”
The never-before-seen matchup is already garnering attention.
The Elyria Police and Fire Departments held a benefit basketball competition on April 30th to promote the game and raise money for EC’s and Elyria’s athletic departments and the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund. The event drew more than 500 spectators and raised nearly $5,000. The Elyria Police department pulled out a 49-39 victory, and earned the added bonus of watching Elyria firefighters wash their patrol cars! The safety service forces also donated a football game trophy for the winner.
“This could be the start of a great rivalry but more importantly, it’s a chance to bring the community together and recognize our students’ accomplishments,” says Chizmar. “It should be fun for both schools.”
