TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENTS

Four Mobile Computer Labs – Bringing Technology to Students

Description:
This is a request for four mobile computer labs needed to increase student access to computers in the new Elyria High School. Currently, the new building has one open computer lab planned in the Washington Building and one open computer lab planned in the new construction phase. The Business Department also has four dedicated computer labs. Each lab can accommodate 25 students at a time. A few computers will be deployed to some classrooms, but overall, there is a need to make more computers available to more of the 1,850 students in the school.

Four mobile computer labs would triple student access to computers and allow each of the four core academic departments to insure student access to computers as needed. Current programming will be enhanced by providing students with additional computers for composition, internet research, presentation development, and other curriculum specific activities and interventions. The district is opting for portable labs using laptop computers and carts. The labs feature a cart that securely stores, charges and transports 25 laptops simultaneously, while an on-cart wireless access point and laser printer provide network access and printing, respectively.

Benefits of Mobile Computer Labs:
  • Do not require expensive dedicated physical space and can be moved and shared;
  • Takes advantage of the school’s new wireless capabilities;
  • Reduces network wiring costs to the district;
  • Provides students with easy access and supervised use;
  • Dramatically improves the student-to-computer ratio;
  • Enhances teaching and learning with added resources;
  • Can be used in creative, interdisciplinary ways across subject areas and physical spaces.

Projected Cost: $150,000 ($37,500 per lab)
(Includes: 100 laptop computers, four carts, four laser printers, back-up batteries)
