May 2013
We are very excited to announce that Westwood Middle School will participate in the nationwide WEB Program, an organization whose sole purpose is to help sixth graders feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year of middle school. The WEB sixth grade orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support sixth graders by assigning them an 8th grade WEB Leader as a mentor during this first year. The WEB Leader is a responsible older student who is hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus. In addition to helping 6th grade students, WEB helps to develop the leadership skills of the older students who are involved in the program.
WEB leaders will be notified by May 17 and begin training the week of May 20th.

We are also excited to announce that the fourth quarter incentive is a trip to Cedar Point on June 5th. This is open to the entire building if they meet the criteria (more info to come soon).

January 2013
Happy New year to all the Westwood Families. I hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Holiday Season . The staff and students are anxious to begin the 2nd semester of the school year. We are working hard to prepare for the OAA ( Ohio Achievement Assessment), which will take place in April.
Our teachers are all beginning the process of being trained in the new Common Core, which will be rolled out in the 2013-2014 school year. The Common Core creates a learning environment that fosters deep thinking, engagement of all students, integration of subject areas, and problem-based learning experiences. More information will be forthcoming.
Please feel free to contact Westwood if you have any questions or concerns

Happy Holiday's to the Westwood Community.
We are half way through the second grading preiod and have mailed interims home to the parents. Also included in the mailing is the December Newsletter, Spirit wear order form and information regarding access to the Parent Portal for Powerteacher. Please be sure to check the website, and keep up with your students grades.
In our goal to reach 95%, we have implemented Academic Assistance for our students on Friday's. This is a hour long intervention to help our students make work up and improve their grades. This program goes hand- in- hand with Wednesday school, but is just offered during the school day during your students lunch and study hall. We have seen a huge improvement in student performance since implemeting this 2 weeks ago.
Aftr the holidays we will be looking forward to implementing our Leadership Academy... more information to come in late January.

Congratulations to Westwood Middle School Students! Our students made the grade and 268 students out of 472 received a 3.0 GPA or higher in the first grading preiod. 56.9%! As a reward the students were able to get a ice cream sundae during lunch and then have the opportunity to dunk their teachers in a dunk tank during a school wide assembly. We are anxious to unveil the 2nd quarter incentive soon.
We had our first ever Leadership lock-in on October 19th. Students in 6th 7th and 8th grade participated in activites throughout the evening to build their character and leadership qualities. These students will serve as our core group for activites throughout the year.

October 2012
Westwood students and staff are off to a great school year. We are entering our final stretch in the first quarter and are challenging our students to achieve 51%. 51% of our students need to achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher to earn them an opportunity to DUNK one of their teachers in a DUNK TANK. In addition they will receive an Ice Cream Social during lunch. We are confident that our students will meet the challenge.
We are proud to announce our first ever Leadership Lock-In on October 26, 2012.The goal is to find student leaders here at Westwood. These students will then become the core for WEB(Where Students Belong), a Middle School orientation and transition program. These leaders could then take their skills to Elyria High School and be a part of the Link Crew.
If you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact the school.
Sincerely,

Elyria School Levy-Issue 38:
On Tuesday, November 6th, the Elyria School District will be on the ballot with a 4.99 mill Emergency Operating Levy. It is Issue 38, and it is critical in maintaining classroom and co-curricular programs, such as music and sports, that help kids succeed. The district already cut $3 million in expenses last year alone and in five years, has closed five schools. Without Issue 38, the district will have to cut an additional $3 million. Please go to www.facebook.com/#!/Issue38ForElyriaSchools for additional information.
