When it comes to snow days, we don’t follow a single formula or magic number. Instead, we weigh several conditions to decide what’s safest. Each situation is a blend of several important considerations, including:
- Snow accumulation
- Wind chill and temperature
- Road conditions and overall travel safety
- Sidewalk access
- Parking lots and on-campus roadway conditions
- Timing of the snowfall—especially as it relates to bus routes and morning arrival
No single factor makes the decision; it’s always the full picture that helps us determine whether school can safely open.
Our maintenance crews are hard at work overnight and early in the mornings when needed, plowing and salting to make our facilities as safe as possible. Still, weather is unpredictable, and there are many moving parts that help inform each decision. We truly do our best to reach a decision and communicate it as quickly as possible.
Robocalls & Text Messages
Our automated messaging system is one of our primary tools for notifying families of closings. Under normal conditions, it's fast and reliable. However, on high-volume weather days—when many districts are activating their own systems at the same time—call delivery can slow down. We use the same system to send robotexts, but please remember:
You must opt in to receive text alerts. Receiving robocalls does not automatically sign you up for texts. Instructions for opting in are available here.
Follow Us on Social Media for the Quickest Updates
While robocalls are helpful, social media is often the fastest way to see an announcement.
Facebook s where we post most consistently and where updates tend to appear first.
Instagram and Twitter/X are also active, especially for our student followers.
We maintain all of these platforms so families and students can stay informed wherever they’re most comfortable.
Not on Social Media? We’ve Got You Covered.
You can also find closing information on:
- Right here, on the district's website
- Local television stations: 3, 5, 8, and 19
- The Chronicle-Telegram
- Local radio stations, WOBL/WDLW and WEOL
A Note About Timing
Each communication platform works a little differently, so updates may not appear everywhere at the exact same moment. On busy weather mornings, it helps to refresh your screen or check a second source. We promise—we’re sending information out as quickly as we can.
And one more important reminder:
Please make sure your contact information is up to date with your student’s school. Accurate phone numbers and email addresses make a big difference on days when timing matters.
And Students…
If you do get a snow day, build those snowmen ... ⛄we'd love to see them around town! But don't worry, we won’t be asking you to report back with details on their radius and height-to-width ratio, and you won't be required to provide us with testing data on your snowman's ability to withstand 20-mph sustained winds. The only assignment is to have fun and be safe!😉
