Elyria Schools will recommend DJ Graham as the next head varsity boys basketball coach of Elyria High School, pending approval by the Elyria Board of Education at an August Board of Education meeting.
An Elyria native, DJ has built an impressive coaching resume at the collegiate levels. He currently serves as an assistant men's basketball coach at Taylor University, where he is involved in all aspects of the program, including player development, game preparation and analysis, performance evaluation, recruiting and leadership.
His coaching experience also includes assistant coaching positions at Cleveland State University, as well as several successful stops at the high school level.
DJ earned a Master of Arts in Sport and Entertainment Management and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. Throughout his coaching career, he has developed a reputation as a motivator, mentor and strategist who is committed to helping student-athletes reach their full potential both on and off the court.
DJ said he believes in creating a culture built on hard work, accountability and teamwork.
“Throughout my coaching career, I have demonstrated a commitment to fostering a competitive, disciplined and team-first culture that prioritizes academic success, personal growth and athletic excellence,” he said. “I am particularly drawn to Elyria High School because it’s always been a dream to coach back in the city where I grew up.”
Superintendent Ann Schloss said the district is excited to welcome DJ back to Elyria.
“We're thrilled to have DJ joining our team and excited about the enthusiasm and energy he brings to this position," Schloss said. "Our focus is always on what's best for our students, and DJ's commitment to hard work, accountability and building a strong team culture aligns with our mission. We believe he will have a tremendous impact on our student-athletes and the program."
The district's selection process included input from current varsity basketball players, who participated in the interview process and had the opportunity to meet each finalist—a practice the athletic department follows in coaching searches.
The student committee highlighted Coach Graham’s strong record in player development and his knowledge of the high school-to-college transition.
Pending Board approval, DJ will assume duties as head varsity boys’ basketball coach next season.
