Students in Mrs. Kathy Pero’s class at Eastern Heights Middle School embarked on an exciting exploration of the topic “What’s in the Air.” Their studies included many subjects, including:

• The Air Force
• The Tuskegee Airmen's flight history
• Careers in air traffic control
• Animals that fly
• Air pollution
• Atmospheric and weather patterns

What an incredible journey it has been! They even visited the Lorain County Airport and had the opportunity to experience a flight simulator right in their classroom.

Elyria School Board Member Brent Parker joined as a guest speaker to discuss air traffic control. Mrs. Pero, an intervention specialist in Elyria Schools’ Special Education program, is known for creating innovative, hands-on experiences that tie learning to the curriculum. Each summer, she develops unit books from scratch to track her students' progress and provide them with a journaling experience throughout their adventures.

To recognize their hard work, students earned custom-made dog tags and colorful beads for completing modules in their air studies unit.

This is yet another example of exceptional teaching within Elyria Schools. Currently, Mrs. Pero’s class is diving into a new unit titled “What on Land?”

Thank you, Mrs. Pero, for your dedication and imaginative lessons -- What an exciting adventure it is to be a student your classroom!
